With self-isolation and social distancing going on since declaration of COVID-19 as pandemic on March 11, 2020, people are looking for ways to spend their time while at home.
For people in Durham Region, it is the best time to make use of your library cards! Whether you are residing in Whitby, Oshawa, or Pickering, all of them offer digital resources that you can access for free by just logging in using your library card details!
Read Comics, Graphic Novels, and E-Books
Access hundreds of comics, graphic novels, and electronic books through Hoopla. You can stream it using your mobile phone, desktop computer, or laptop.
There is a limit of 10 items that you can borrow every month, though. It resets automatically, and you get notifications on how many borrows are left!
Hoopla is available in Whitby Public Library (WPL), and Oshawa Public Library (OPL). In Pickering Public Library (PPL), they also offer Hoopla and other additional resources like Overdrive, Libby, Tumblebooks, and Tumblebook Cloud Junior.
Listen to AudioBooks
I was listening to some non-fiction audiobooks last month. Audiobooks are perfect when your eyes are already tired from looking at your device. Getting that rest while still being entertained or, in my case, learning is achievable indeed.
Thanks to Hoopla, they got a wide selection of audiobooks. Listen via the app or the website, anytime and anywhere!
Read Newspapers and Magazines
PressReader, an application that you can use with your Whitby Public Library card, allows you to access 7000 newspapers and magazines from 125 countries. You can follow the latest news about Coronavirus from The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, The Wall Street Journal, and many other newspaper publications.
Or I can go to Philippines publications, and look for news updates from my home country. There are 70+ publications available as of writing, the prominent newspapers are in there such as Manila Bulletin, The Philippine Star, and Philippine Daily Inquirer. I also spotted tabloids, namely Tempo, Bandera, Pilipino Star Ngayon.
RBdigital is another platform available in WPL. It provides access not only to magazines but also to newspapers, audiobooks, comics, education, and a lot more.
Learn Another Language
PPL offers Mango, a website/app where you can learn languages. You got over 70 languages to choose from.
From Cantonese Chinese to French and with added specialty courses like Arab Etiquette and Superstitions under Modern Standard Arabic, you can challenge yourself to learn something new every day!
You will be surprised at how easy to use, and enjoyable Mango is. A study showed that with just two hours of practice over two months, 82% of participants improved their score at a standard language proficiency test. Alongside with this, 85% of learners who studied at least one hour per week improved their oral proficiency score.
Watch Free TV Shows and Movies
Hoopla also offers movies and TV shows that you can watch without the hassle of waiting time if someone is already watching the same title. It is available in WPL, OPL, and PPL.
In PPL and WPL, they also offer Kanopy, a streaming platform where you can see thousands of films for free – most especially if you’re craving for critically-acclaimed movies, inspiring documentaries, and award-winning foreign films!
There you have it! I hope you’ll make use of those free online resources that are just waiting for you to tap on. Enjoy and you’re welcome!
